Writing center, tutoring, counseling, career center, food pantry, health center, disability services and the international office.
Your tuition and fees already pay for many services. Using them is normal and shows you are serious, not weak.
Academic help
Writing center: free one-on-one help with essays, citations and English. Book online, bring the assignment and your draft.
Tutoring center: free help in math, science, statistics and languages.
Library: librarians help you find sources. Many libraries lend laptops and calculators and have quiet rooms you can book.
Academic advisor: helps you choose classes and plan your degree. Meet once a term.
Health and well-being
Student health center: doctor and nurse visits, vaccines, often at low cost. Ask what your student insurance covers.
Counseling center: free or low-cost talks with a counselor about stress, homesickness, sadness, relationships or sleep. It is private and has nothing to do with your visa.
In a crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), any time.
Money and food
Food pantry: free groceries for students. Many campuses have one, open to all students, often without questions.
Emergency funds: small grants or loans if something unexpected happens. Ask the dean of students office.
Financial aid office: scholarships, payment plans and campus jobs.
Career center
Resume and cover letter reviews, practice interviews, job fairs and the school's job board (often Handshake).
For F-1 and J-1 students, work must follow the rules. Talk to the international office about CPT, OPT or academic training before you accept any job.
International student office
Your DSO (F-1) or RO (J-1) is here. Contact them for:
Travel signatures on your I-20 or DS-2019.
Questions about work, dropping classes, address changes and status.
Orientation, events and help with tax forms.
Other services
Disability services: extra test time, note-takers or other changes if you have a disability or a health condition. You need documents from a doctor.
Recreation center: gym and sports, often included in fees.
Student organizations: clubs for your country, language, religion or hobby, a fast way to make friends.
Campus police and safety escorts: someone can walk you home at night.
Common mistakes
Waiting until you fail a class before going to tutoring.
Thinking counseling is only for serious illness. Many students use it for normal stress.
